Climate Smart Agriculture and Economic Empowerment

The Centre for Research and Integrated Development (CeRID), in partnership with NCA-NORAD, is leading the Climate Smart Agricultural Value Chain and Economic Empowerment program. This innovative initiative tackles three critical challenges faced by Somali communities: youth unemployment, climate change, and food insecurity.

Project Overview

CeRID implemented the Climate Smart Agricultural Value Chain and Economic Empowerment programme in partnership with NCA–NORAD. The three-year initiative responded to youth unemployment, climate change, and food insecurity through vocational education, agricultural support, and community resilience planning.

Overall Goal

To equip marginalised people and communities with the skills, resources, and support needed to build sustainable livelihoods and resilience to a changing climate.

Key Objectives

  1. Prepare young people for employment and financial independence through vocational skills training.
  2. Strengthen small-scale farmers with training, certified seeds, farm inputs, and access to land.
  3. Connect participants with financial institutions and private-sector opportunities.
  4. Establish community-managed disaster risk reduction plans and climate early-warning systems.
  5. Strengthen government participation in agricultural extension and supportive policy.

Emerging Impact

By combining vocational training with climate-smart agricultural support, the programme created two complementary pathways to stronger livelihoods. Youth gained job-ready skills while farmers improved access to knowledge and productive resources, and communities strengthened their planning for climate-related risks.
